how to make proper s’mores indoors

posted on: February 25, 2013

Call me crazy, but I’ve been craving s’mores lately. After months of being cooped up, a night of roasting ‘mallows in my friends’ treehouse while scheming ways to get my Babe Ruth signed baseball back from The Beast sounds pretty darn good. (You’re killing me, Smalls!) Seeing as it’s really freaking cold outside, maybe not such a good idea, but I just can’t bring myself to make s’mores in the microwave or under the broiler. So I did what anyone in my situation would do: I went on a Google rampage and found a way to properly roast marshmallows indoors without a) burning the house down or b) inhaling toxic chemicals. Check it out here. Cute, right? Basically, you fill a small terra cotta pot half full with little rocks, nestle in a little fuel canister (I bought mine at the local Ace Hardware store) and surround the canister with more rocks.

I was so tickled with the outcome that I decided to throw a little s’more soirée with my family. I filled a chip and dip with graham cracker squares, three kinds of chocolate (Hershey’s milk, Hershey’s cookies and cream, and Reese’s peanut butter cups) and big, fluffy marshmallows so people could help themselves. I also popped a big bowl of buttered popcorn and put out fresh strawberries to counteract the sugar overload. And wine, ’cause we’re all adults here. It was so much fun (and so easy!) that I plan on making a few more roasters and using them all year…probably by myself…reciting these lines and cracking up.
