packing light

For my upcoming trip to Europe, I’m attempting something kind of crazy…

I’m going carry-on. Oh yes, I’m going to attempt to fit everything I need for three weeks in Europe in a carry-on bag. Why, you ask? Well, my trip includes six intercontinental flights, and I’d really rather not deal with checking my bag each and every time I fly. I bought this bag at a Labor Day sale last weekend and did a “test run” of my packing last night, and I really think I can do it. Yay optimism!

As I’ve mentioned before, I am a notorious last-minute packer. But I’m also a light packer, so as long as I plan ahead this time, I think I’ll be fine. Aside from shoes, the things that tend to take up the most room in my bag (and force me to check it) are my hair products. Not this time my friends! I finally heeded the advice of multiple stylish “jetsetters” (per Vogue, ITG and Harper’s Bazaar, the authorities on such matters as far as I’m concerned) and ordered my must-have Oribé texturizing and wave and shine sprays in travel size. I also threw in their signature shampoo and conditioner to meet the free shipping price point for good measure. (Hey, if I’m going to pack light, I might as well pack luxuriously.)

Speaking of hair care, one of the major cons of traveling abroad for me is the whole voltage situation. The first time I traveled to England to visit Phil, I fried the hell out of my hair dryer and had to buy a new one when I got home, which was pretty devastating (yeah, real problems over here). Needless to say, I will not be packing my hair dryer, curling iron, etc. with me on this trip, freeing up additional space in my carry-on bag – woop woop! Instead, I am laying myself at the mercy of the hotel gods and praying with all my might that they stock somewhat decent hair dryers in their bathrooms. Worst case scenario, I buy one while I’m over there. Even worse-er case scenario, my hair is a f*cking mess the whole trip and I buy a fabulous hat. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Do you guys think I’m crazy for thinking I can pull this off? Any tips for packing light?
