Athletic shoes have emerged as fashionable footwear for fall. And no, I don’t mean the always cool classic Converse, which, aside from wedge sneakers, are maybe the least athletic of all athletic shoes (unless it’s the 1950s and you’re playing basketball…before there was a three point line…seriously, look it up). I’m talking legitimate, sure-I’ll-run-a-mile-‘cause-that’s-what-these-are-built-for running shoes. I’d venture to guess that no women’s fashion trend has been so popular with boyfriends/husbands/dates/what have you since yoga pants became standard casual wear. High heels may lift the butt, but comfortable footwear lifts the spirit. And you can always perk up the butt in other ways, like performing extended squats on the dance floor in your super sweet kicks.

The trick, it seems, to pulling off the athletic shoe trend is to look anything but sporty from the ankles up. I’m talking blazers, button-downs, styled denim, cozy knits, edgy skirts, dresses, designer bags, etc. etc. I’ve taken to styling my Nike Flyknits with plum J.Crew Minnie pants, a leopard print knit, and moto inspired leather and aviators. I also love the idea of wearing Nike Air Max sneakers with distressed denim and a cropped sweater. Play around. See what you think.
