glowing green smoothie

TWELFTH AVENUE | Glowing Green Smoothie

While most of you will probably be imbibing green beer, Irish car bombs and shots of Jameson on Sunday, I thought I’d kick off St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a green smoothie recipe chock full of fruits and veggies. It sounds (and looks) kind of gross, but I swear it’s addicting. I drink one of these bad boys almost every morning.

Tomorrow, I am launching a full blown spring cleaning attack on my apartment. Everything from the bathtub to the toaster will be scrubbed into shiny submission. If any of you have any good cleaning tips, please let me know in the comments. In the meantime, cheers to your health!

makes 2 large or 4 medium smoothies

1 1/2 cups water
1 head of romaine lettuce
Big handful of spinach
1 apple, core and seeds removed
1 pear, core and seeds removed
2 stalks of celery
1 banana
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Small handful of cilantro (including stems)

Combine water, romaine lettuce and spinach in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the apple, pear, celery and cilantro and blend again until smooth. Add the banana and lemon juice and (wait for it) blend until smooth. Did I mention the smoothie should be smooth? Pour yourself a big glass and drink up!

If you are making smoothies a day or two in advance, I’ve found they keep well in mason jars. Mason jars are surprisingly cheap at our local Cash & Carry, and as much as I hate myself for being so Portland hipster, I use them all the time.
